The "Three Things..." Trilogy Challange (complete)
Name: Courtney Kathrys
Title: Letting Lily Go
E-mail: Faeriedeath@hotmail.com
Summery: James questions Sirius on whether or not to let his dream of Lily Evans go, on a night where the truth is all that can be spoken. Sirius debates whether to wait out the night, and lie, or to tell James what he really thinks.
Notes: Written for Fiction Alley Park’s “Three Things That Never Happened To…” Leap Year Challenge. The guidelines are: Must be 200 words or shorter (mine are all exactly 200); Leap Year must be the date of one event and mean something important to the Wizarding World; It must be the same character who the events are about; Must be three separate stories.
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters are by JK Rowling. I only own the plot.

“Tell me to let her go, Sirius, and I will.”
It was nearing midnight, on February 29. James and Sirius stood in the snow on the abandoned Quidditch pitch as the last remnants of Leap Year faded, taking advantage of the veritaserum in the air, a fog that seemed to settle over the wizarding world one day in every four years where you couldn’t lie, and where the truth would either set you free, or condemn you.
“Tell me to let her go, Sirius, and I will.”
Five minutes till midnight. Sirius weighed his options. He could hold out, lie, tell James to keep after Lily. Say what a best mate should. But Sirius knew that road led to marriage, children, and the inevitable death.
“Tell me to let her go, Sirius, and I will.”
Three minutes till midnight. Sirius could tell the truth, tell him to let her go, to give her up. There was a war out there and he couldn’t afford to loose his concentration for a moment, for Lily, for a family.
“Tell me to let her go, Sirius, and I will.”
One minute till midnight. Sirius sighed, and made his choice.
“Let her go, mate.”

“What do you want us to do, Sirius?”
It was nearing midnight on October 29. The autumn wind crackled against Godric’s Hollow as Sirius stood facing Peter, James, Lily, and baby Harry. The Fidelius charm was about to be cast. All they needed was confirmation from the secret keeper.
“What do you want us to do, Sirius?”
Five minutes till midnight. Sirius knew he was most liable, that everyone would know he was Secret Keeper. He knew that information would be the death of him, of James, of his family –even the Wizarding World. Someone inconspicuous, someone like Peter may be a better choice for their safety.
“What do you want us to do, Sirius?”
Three minutes till midnight. But James trusted him, Sirius, with his life and the lives of those he loved. That wasn’t an honor to throw away lightly, to give to someone lesser. Though they loved Peter dearly, if he was caught he wouldn’t have the same strength Sirius had to hold out against the backlash. Sirius was nothing if not loyalty.
“What do you want us to do, Sirius?”
One minute till midnight. Sirius looked at James and nodded.
“I will be your Secret Keeper.”

“What good will a newspaper do you, Black?”
It was nearing midnight on July 27. Cornelius Fudge looked disgustedly at Sirius’ fathomless black eyes through the bars of the Azkaban prison cell. His clean and manicured fingers gripped the latest Daily Prophet, as Sirius’ own dirty and broken hands reached for it. The two stayed locked in a war of the stillness of hands, and eyes.
“What good will a newspaper do you, Black?”
Five minutes till midnight. Sirius knew he should answer that reading about the world outdoors would serve to torment him more, bring him closer to the brink of insanity. He knew he should appeal to the sadism in Fudges’ heart.
“What good will a newspaper do you, Black?”
Three minutes till midnight. He could mention how he was desperate for a distraction, a change, something to occupy his mind since his last paper had rotted away to thin parchment and smears of ashy ink. He should beg that if Fudge had any humanity in him he would have mercy.
“What good will a newspaper do you, Black?”
One minute till midnight. Sirius looked down dejectedly and withdrew his hand, sliding silently back into his cell.
“Nothing.”
